Hosting Your Own Wine Tasting Party

October 7, 2016

Do you enjoy wine? Perhaps you want to get your friends together to taste different ones. Even if you don’t know much about wines to begin with, hosting a wine tasting is a great way to get educated and have a little bit of fun. Here are a few tips on how to host your very own wine tasting party.

Pick the Wine

The first, and probably most obvious, step is to pick your wines. Your possibilities are pretty much limitless. You can opt to choose one variety and get several from different regions. Or perhaps you’d prefer to compare different wines of the same style. Maybe you’d rather try several of the different wines that a single region has to offer, or try different vintages of the same wine. If you’re still at a loss, you can always have your guests arrive with a bottle of wine each (just have them confirm what they’re bringing first, so you don’t wind up with multiples). No matter what theme you go for, with your friends, you’re certain to have a good time.

Purchase According to Your Guest List

For the best party, keep it small, no more than 8 to 10 people total. Keeping your guest list small means that conversation will be easier. As for how much to buy, ideally you want about 2 ounces per guest. Most wine bottles are approximately 24 ounces, which means you’ll only need a single bottle, and you’ll have a little extra for those who want a little extra taste.

Get Your Supplies

You don’t need to go crazy decorating for a wine tasting, unless you want to. Simple, clear stemware and a plain, white tablecloth allow you to see the color of the win unobstructed. Consider having two wine glasses per person, which allows for comparison. Make sure you provide water pitchers and a palate cleanser, such as plain crackers or bread. Give each guest a notepad to record their thoughts. And, while it seems gross, provide spit buckets so that guests can get rid of any wine they don’t want to finish and avoid getting tipsy.

Consider Pairings

If you really want to make things interesting, you can do a bit of research on pairing specific wines with certain foods. You can get chocolate, cheeses and nuts, and really experience wine and food, how they interact with one another and accentuate different flavors.

Serve Your Wine

Think about the order in which you plan on serving your wines. Typically, they are served from light to dark and at specific temperatures. For instance, anything bubbly is served between 40 and 45 degrees, whites between 40 and 50 and reads between 55 and 65.
