Hourglass Blueline Estate Cabernet

2013 constitutes the second year of California’s current drought cycle, replicating condition of the mid-1970s - some of which remain legendary for their classic structural core, longevity and freshness. As we learn more about the fascinating scientific nature of wine, we are coming to understand that ageability is related to structure: First, the wonderful “tightly knit” structure is a function of the relationship between tannin and color, and second, the tannin/color relationship seems to take cues from soil conditions, especially the availability of soil moisture. This would certainly explain the great vintages of the mid-70s and why we are so excited about the 2012-2014 vintages. This may also explain why rocky, well-drained vineyards have long been considered premier sites.

A very dry, warm vintage, 2013's abnormally cool nights (a must for great vintages) allowed for development of phenolic compounds at levels our winemaker, Tony Biagi, hasn't seen in his 20 years of winemaking.  “By the end of harvest, I was convinced this was the best vintage I’d ever experienced," he says. "Tannin and color levels were high yet beautifully proportioned, leading to wines with great structural integrity. The cool nights also preserved acidity and freshness, balanced by deep extraction of rich flavors - the best of both worlds.”

If all of this sounds a little technical, suffice it to say we believe 2013 to be one of the greatest vintages in our winery's history.

Producer's Notes

A cascade of aromatics starts with a bright floral note of tea rose oil before descending through cassis and blackberry, with a hint of barrel toast and crushed graphite. A sense of yin yang defines the 2013 Blueline Estate Cabernet Sauvignon: It is one of the most deeply concentrated vintages of Blueline Cab we have crafted, and yet it exhibits a strong presence of nervy minerality in the back mid-palate, providing lift and brightness to the overall richness.  An incredibly tight weave of refined tannins holds the center core firmly in place, wrapped as it is with a lush layer of black fruit.  Blackberry bramble and cassis are infused with a crushed stone character that brightens the richness across the palate and lingers for a long arching finish.
